Hasta luego Anam Cara.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

We tell ourselves in a hundred ways how something won’t work, and so we put off starting because it is too hard. We tell ourselves

  • It’s too big
  • We can’t do it
  • It might not work
  • It will cost too much

Let me tell you a story to illustrate this. Some years ago Grace and I decided that we wanted to have a coaching centre somewhere sunny, and we decided on Spain. We weren’t sure how we would find the money we would need, but soon after we made the decision, the UK housing market went mad, our house value shot up and we were easily able to raise a loan on our property. We couldn’t find a suitable building for the centre, so we searched for some land, and we bought a fabulous plot. Then, everything got difficult. Building prices went up in Spain, and we had planning problems, which our weak Spanish was not able to solve. On a trip with some Spanish-speaking friends, we showed them the plot and told them we were thinking of selling the plot because the project was stuck. That evening, over dinner, they suggested that we take them on as partners and they would pay for the building! A project that seemed impossible actually happened because we got started, and kept going. Things fell into place that we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. There is a picture of the almost-completed centre at the top of this blog post.

So what can you do? Anything that looks too big is often scary, so what can you do to allay your fears?

  • If it’s too big, cut it down into steps.
  • If you can’t do it, then find out how you can do it and learn the skills. Most things are simpler than you think once you get over your fear.
  • It might not work – but what if it does? There are no guarantees, but one thing I know for sure – you will come to regret the things that you didn’t try, rather than the things you did.
  • And the cost? Look at our example. The universe is an abundant place. Proceed positively; you will be surprised what opportunities surround you.

I am launching a new coaching college, Peninsula Coaching, and that seems scary. All of the above fears affect me but I’ve started and I’ll finish! Look out for the publicity and come to the launch on May 18th.
